Golfers can combine rounds on the Costa Brava’s nine spectacular golf courses with a full taste of Spanish culture by attending one of the many festivals and events put on across the region throughout the year.

From major internationally-acclaimed festivals boasting world-class line-ups to smaller shows, there are more than 30 festivals for golfers to enjoy throughout the summer months – with everything from music, theatre, magic, circus and film festivals taking place across Girona and the surrounding areas.

Hosted in some of the Costa Brava’s most idyllic and emblematic spaces such as villages, castles, botanical gardens, archaeological sites and historical monuments, as well as natural refuges and beaches, the variety of festivals and breathtaking locations are among the best in the world.

The music festivals offer top performances in genres such as classical, opera, jazz, pop and rock, not to mention traditional havaneres (colonial shanties) and sardana music, while an array of festivals devoted to theatre and other performing arts – such as dance, clowning and puppetry – are also a big hit. For lovers of the seventh art, there is a fantastic selection of film festivals and shows which always reel in a big crowd.

The streets fill with acrobatics, choreography, magic, surprises and joy with circus, dance and magic festivals turning some towns into huge stages, drawing in people of all ages ready to enjoy the show.

For those looking to explore the culture of a Spanish town, tourists can join the local communities for their most eagerly-awaited event of the year, the festa major (main local festival), where townsfolk come together to celebrate and enjoy magic moments full of fun and symbolic value with the most deep-rooted traditions.

In the daytime, the streets also come to life and are transformed into lively markets in an atmosphere full of aromas and colours – giving visitors a true insight into Girona’s people, traditions and collective spirit.

Notable festivals include The Cap Roig Festival, a music and dance festival held in the Gardens of Cap Roig. Celebrated annually since 2001, this event attracts a variety of national and international artists.

The Festival de Porta Ferrada, born in 1958 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, is the oldest summer festival in Spain and takes place throughout the village in its streets, squares and venues with a range of local and international artists from a variety of disciplines – including musicians, singers, orchestras and choirs. The festival is also renowned for the number of educational activities and workshops it runs to benefit young Catalan musicians.

The mediaeval Castell de Peralada is the setting for the Castell de Peralada Festival during the months of July and August. Set in the Castle Park gardens, the auditorium is the ideal venue for concerts on a summer night. The church and the cloister, by contrast, host recitals, chamber concerts and small-format operas.

A spokesperson for Golf Costa Brava said: “We encourage all golfers visiting the region to immerse themselves in the culture and fill up their diaries with highly-enriching activities to make the most out of their experience.

“Not only do we offer world-class golf, but you can also enjoy an unsurpassed schedule of festivals that are unique to the rest of the world. After a day out on the course, what’s a better way to unwind than to celebrate with us and enjoy some memorable performances in spectacular surroundings and venues?”

Alongside the outstanding golf courses, culture, festivals and events, there is plenty more to discover about the region with its wealth of accommodation options, diverse nightlife, easy travel links, great weather and value for money. Golfers can enjoy superb gastronomy, dazzling beaches, blissful nature, rejuvenating wellness and even the possibility of snow sports with the Pyrenees in the backyard.
