Description

The Sand Moor Golf Course is an 18 hole Championship course, measuring 6,360yards, consisting of three par 5’s, eleven par 4’s and 4 par 3 holes. It was designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie in 1926 – who sat on the very first Greens Committee at the club – and famously went on to design Augusta National.

The course is perhaps better known for its four challenging par 3’s – each of which were originally designed by Alister MacKenzie. Each par 3 varies in length, style and offers a different challenge. Sand Moors longest hole is the 545 yard 16th hole, which features a tricky right to left sloping fairway.

Although the club officially opened in 1926, it was five years earlier that Henry Barran began to lay out a course, originally of six holes, four to the south of Alwoodley Lane. The major influence in the creation of the course was Yorkshire born Dr. Alister MacKenzie, who chaired the first AGM on March 17th, 1925. He had previously designed the other two major golf courses in the area.

The club opened on March 20th 1926. Members were invited to buy a debenture to finance the construction of the original clubhouse, which was then situated close to where Moortown’s clubhouse is currently located. The number subscribing to debentures is probably revealed at the first Ordinary Annual General Meeting held at the Clubhouse on February 26th, 1927, when the membership figures included 77 Gentlemen and 14 Lady “Debenture Holders”.
