Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club

Situated centrally at the heart of Englands Golf Coast, Southport and Ainsdale (S&A) has twice hosted the Ryder Cup. It is a majestic and challenging championship course with undulating fairways, rolling dunes, heathland shoulders, and more often than not a steady sea breeze. All this supports it’s reputation as a formidable TOP 50 golfing challenge, and adds support as to why it hosts other major competitions and the R&A Amateur Championship.  S&A was described as one of the best designed links courses ever, however one of the most famous quotes about Southport and Ainsdale GC was made by Walter Hagen, who after leading the USA and winning the Ryder Cup, Hagen openly stated ‘ I have just had the greatest thrill of my golfing life.’  The course today remains a magnificent test of golf and this remains a highly sought after and respected destination for travelling golfers.  It’ pedigree is high and during 2023 it will host the professional Ladies Rose Series, the R&A Amateur Championship and the England Golf County Finals.  S&A continues to deliver on both the desire for modern distance and those who seek original James Braid architectural features. Upon completing 18 holes golfers will always feel a true sense of achievement.

Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club is proud to offer its members and visitors the services of one of the areas most experienced and respected Professionals Jim Payne.  He has an extensive coaching background and has achieved one of the most honoured goals in golf by playing in The Open Championship, four times, as well as winning many events including the Italian Open.  In 1992 Jim was Rookie of the Year on the European Tour. He won two European Tour events, the 1993 Turespana Iberia Open de Baleares and the 1996 Italian Open.

A warm welcome is always received, he and his team offer excellent coaching and if required you can be assured that you are in the hands of a true craftsmen when you seek his services for fitting or repair S&A also offer gift voucher services as well as trophies and prizes available to order for large groups of visitors, clubs, and societies. Trolleys, including electric models are available for hire together with buggies in the summer season.

The Clubhouse

Having an historic and original clubhouse with friendly staff S&A welcome golfing parties of all sizes to enjoy their first class services both pre and post their rounds. They offer a wide and varied menu catering for all tastes and dietary requirements.  Guests can choose to explore and dine in the famous Ryder Room surrounded by historical memorabilia and archived media whilst enjoying and savouring a replica of the 1937 Ryder Cup Menu, or if preferred, you could enjoy an exquisite custom built 4 course meal accompanied by fine wines and spirits from their cellars.  Less formal but equally as enjoyable visitors can share fresh food and beverages either in the club house lounge with panoramic views across the course, or alternatively, whilst sitting in the sunshine on the outdoor patio that overlooks the famous 18th green. A perfect end to a perfect day.

Heritage and Ryder Cup

Since its beginning in 1906, Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club has been held in high regard for the challenge it poses to amateur, elite, and the professional golfer. As early as 1914, it hosted the Lancashire Amateur championship, and has continued to host such 10 times, most recently in 2022.  Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club will however always be famous for its association with the Ryder Cup, hosting the event in 1933 and 1937, (during the latter of which saw the American Team led by their captain Walter Hagen become the 'first to win' an overseas match with victory over Great Britain).
Their rich history continues and involvement in championship competitions runs very deep. The links continues to host events for both amateur and professional golf. It has a high pedigree and maintains high standards having hosted many competitions that include; The Professional Ladies Qualification for the Ladies British Open Championship, (1979), The world’s elite Juniors graced the links in 2015, when the club co-hosted the British Boys Amateur Championship, and even today, the elite continue to visit. In 2023 they will host The Professional Rose Ladies Series, The R&A Amateur Championship, and in autumn, The England Golf Mens County Finals.  As you can see historical heritage continues to grow and such remains for future generations to enjoy and share.  S&A has a strong love of the game, and as a club they firmly continue to support and help develop the game of golf, both amateur and professionals will always be welcome.

We are now taking bookings for Twilight golf in 2023. The price is £420 for a 4 Ball (this can't be split down in to smaller group sizes), playing after 3.00pm on a weekday. The offer is subject to availability.

Our Sunday Driver Package involves 2 rounds of golf.
