Located on the beautiful, sand-skirted Tróia Peninsula on the Atlantic coast, Troia was designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior and opened for play in 1980 to a rightful fanfare of trumpets. Set as part of the Troia Resort, which features five and four star hotels, a range of modern apartments, villas and beach houses, a vibrant marina, as well as a casino, restaurants, bars, sporting facilities and many other on-site attractions and amenities.

Since its opening, Troia has established itself among Europe’s elite courses and hosted a number of prestigious national and international tournaments, including the Portuguese Open in 1983.

• Course information: 6,317m, par 72.
Featuring Trent Jones Senior’s trademark bold bunkering, raised greens and doglegs through a combination of pine trees and indigenous coastal plants, Troia’s spectacular scenery and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Arrábida mountain range, mixed with its variety of challenging and enjoyable holes, make it one of Portugal’s finest courses.

Surrounded by wildlife and nature in the heart of Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, the course plays to 6,908 yards along the coast and requires a multitude of shots, making it a stern test for golfers of all abilities.

Two holes that stand out are the third and 18th, with the par-four third hole being considered by Trent Jones Senior as one of the best he’s ever designed – including it in his ideal 18-hole golf course. The hole blends seamlessly with the landscape and has breathtaking views throughout. Hole 18 is a par-five left dogleg with an elevated green protected by three front bunkers.
