One of Portugal’s most popular golf destinations is officially better than ever, with Onyria Quinta da Marinha climbing into the top 30 of National Club Golfer magazine’s list of the ‘Top 100 Golf Resorts in Continental Europe’.
The latest edition of the publication’s respected ranking has placed the resort in Cascais, near Lisbon, at number 27 – a rise of seven places.
Such recognition vindicates a period of extensive investment and improvement across the acclaimed golf and lifestyle venue, headlined by a stunning new clubhouse overlooking the third hole. As well as cold drinks awaiting golfers after a round, the sleek, modern facility serves a wide range of fresh food and houses a well-equipped pro shop.
Quinta da Marinha’s driving range was also upgraded in 2020, introducing a second putting green and new bunker practice area to complement the existing 32-bay facility and putting greens. The new-look range employs Trackman and swing analysis technology to provide golfers with detailed information about every practice stroke before they head out onto the course.
However, National Club Golfer’s list not only takes into account the quality of golf on offer but also all off-course amenities and accommodation. Perhaps the biggest change across the resort was the opening of the five-star Onyria Marinha Boutique Hotel at the start of 2023. Beside the golf course and a quick walk from the sea, the hotel features 84 incredible rooms, suites and villas, culinary options and function spaces.
The resort’s move up the rankings can also be attributed to an extensive refurbishment of the original Quinta da Marinha Hotel in 2020. Expert-led renovations saw significant improvements made to the hotel’s rooms and hallways, as well as the lobby and all three dining options – the buffet-style Five Pines Restaurant, the gourmet Rocca and the ambient Trent Jones bar.
One year later, the resort announced the completion of a €1.5m refurbishment of its 27 holiday villas. Changes included an additional bedroom for each villa, making them even more suitable for families and larger groups, as well as aesthetic changes to give the properties a fresh look.
João Pinto Coelho, sales director at Onyria Quinta da Marinha, said: “We are very pleased and proud to see that our hard work to improve the resort has been rewarded with a climb up the rankings.
“As firm believers that a resort must keep evolving and upgrading in the right places, we’re already thinking about how to get even better year on year.”
The changes have bolstered what was already one of Europe’s most respected and popular golfing destinations. A par-71 course designed by Robert Trent Jones, arguably history’s most prolific golf architect, has been a firm favourite in Portugal’s golf scene since opening in 1984.
Just half an hour from Lisbon Airport, the resort is also known for its immersive Natur Spa, an oasis of relaxation beside the Atlantic Ocean. An array of extensive meeting and event hosting capabilities recently saw the resort honoured with Silver in the prestigious M&IT Awards’ ‘Best Overseas Hotel’ category.
